Italian highlights: Capri

For all its hoity-toity reputation, I really liked Capri. Mom and I opted not to do the tour with the group. Instead we went with a smaller group to see some gardens on the southern side of the island. From the balconies there we had a great view of the rocks of the coast of the island.

The view from the gardens.

Then I went on a walk up to the Villa Jovis, where Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire during his final years. The walk was more of an uphill power walk/jog because I didn’t have much time before I had to meet mom for lunch. Along the way I saw tons of private residences on the island. The people there don’t have cars because there aren’t really roads. Instead I saw many women dragging their shopping carts to and from produce markets. I also saw several small carts delivering butane (for heating and hot water), along with a shuttle taking some elderly people to their house. While this moved like a car, it was only 1/3 the width of a car and I actually had to climb on a wall to let it pass because we couldn’t both fit on the path.

The Villa was in ruins, but had spectacular views of the island as well as both bays (Naples and Salerno). I was also the only person inside the site when I was up there, which meant I could look around at my own pace (rather than following the tour guide’s voice on my earpiece).

The Bays of Naples and Salerno as they meet the sea.

After my work-out (getting up the hill, around the villa and back down in a short amount of time is a work-out), I had lunch with my mom and some other people from our group. Then we walked around Capri. Most of the places were closed because it was the off season and apparently the people of Capri follow a siesta schedule.

This picture is for mom. It was on the wall just outside the entrance to the perfume plant/shop where she bought some solid perfume.
