One morning we visited the ruins at Pompeii, a city destroyed and preserved when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. During our tour, we saw houses and cantinas as well as the main shopping street and central forum (plaza). More interesting than the buildings were the details which hinted at how the people of that time lived.
We looked at street signs from the time of Pompeii which were carved on tablets.
Mount Vesuvius looming in the background.
Stepping stones served two purposes: 1. to help people cross the street in times of rain and 2. to keep people who used carriages with low-wheel bases out of that neighborhood.
